A Letter...

Dearest King,

I am writing you today to tell you that I, and the colony of South Carolina, are fully and loyally behind your stance on slavery in the colonies. Seeing as our colony's population is 61% slaves, and that more than 50% of the slaves that come into America come through Charleston, we would hate to see all of that revenue and commerce leave! Also, our rice production has sky rocketed, and seeing as rice is our main source of income, and slaves are the ones that contribute the most to all of the labor that it takes to produce the rice, we appreciate the fact that you want them to stay, and that we are allowed to buy them for life!

On the topic of slavery... I do not appreciate the fact that you and your advisers denied us the right to try and increase our white population by promising incentives to those who come in! With slavery being so prevalent in South Carolina, and the need for slavery due to the high demand for rice and other products, we are outnumbered! I don't want a re-occurrence of the Stono Rebellion, where more than 20 of our men died to the hands of slaves! And I am fearful that, by you denying us the right to provide some incentive for people to move in, our white population will not increase, and something like that will happen again! The blood will be on your hands!

Lastly, I must say that I do not like this idea of direct taxation on our paper materials! We work very hard on producing and shipping the things that we have here in America to you in England, and the fact that you want to take more from us is just preposterous! The least that you could do is let us have some representation in the things that involve us! No taxation without representation!

Humbly,

Tyler Perry
The Royal Governor of South Carolina
